Nicola Steuer
Head of nef's Centre for Wellbeing, New Economics Foundation

Nicola Steuer joined nef in June 2006 and is Head of the Centre for Wellbeing. Nicola contributes directly to the research and advocacy activities of the centre as well as managing the centre’s finances and overseeing the work of the centre’s research staff. Since joining nef, Nicola has led work on the links between sustainable development and wellbeing on behalf of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and acted as project manager and lead researcher for the Audit Commission (working alongside the Young Foundation, LSE and IDeA) to explore the feasibility of developing measures of wellbeing for use by local government and their strategic partners.

Nicola has a BA (Hons) degree in Geography from the University of Birmingham and an MA in Human Geography from the University of Leeds. Prior to joining nef, Nicola was Deputy Director of the Centre for Local Economic Strategies (CLES) in Manchester where she led the charity’s research and consultancy activities in the fields of regeneration, sustainable economic development and local governance. In this role, Nicola worked with local authorities, Local Strategic Partnerships, voluntary and community sector organisations, regeneration partnerships and Regional Development Agencies throughout the country. Nicola has also previously worked in academia where her research interests were in community economic development and local labour markets.
