Ian Johnston
Consultant

Dr Ian Johnston CB is a lifelong advocate of the value of vocational education and training. For 10 years to 1995 he was in charge of this policy area for GB, as Director General at the Manpower Services Commission and then at the Department of Education and Employment. During this time many initiatives were developed, including modern apprenticeships, investors in people, the technical and vocational education initiative, and NVQs. He then moved into university leadership, for example as Vice Chancellor at Glasgow Caledonian, a working class vocational university in the heart of Glasgow with very good links with FE Colleges. From 1995 to 2000 he was a statutory adviser to the European Commission on vocational education. He has served as a non- executive on many education and enterprise related charities e.g. the Industrial Society (now the Work Foundation) and on Scottish Enterprise Glasgow. Now retired, he is still a member of two "think tanks" and is advising the Young Foundation on the apprenticeship strand of the "wellbeing” project.
